The position
We are seeking a Senior Patent Attorney to strengthen our ability to build and manage robust patent portfolios for ALK's expanding pipeline and partnerships.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct patent landscape evaluations and monitor competitor patent activities to drive strategic IP generation and support pipeline opportunities for ALK.
- Draft, prosecute, and enforce patents that protect innovations of high strategic importance to ALK.
- Assess Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) risks and devise and execute effective mitigation plans, including navigating patent invalidation scenarios.
- Provide expert patent opinions and evaluations to stakeholders and senior leadership, particularly in the context of external asset evaluations and strategic decision-making.
- Liaise with and manage external partners.
- Contribute to the further development and organisation of the patent department.
In this role, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including R&D, business development, and strategic portfolio management. Additionally, you will collaborate with external consultants and IP law firms for support in executing your role. Your expertise will play a key role in ensuring strategic decisions are implemented efficiently.
Your profile
To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with the following qualifications, experience and personal capabilities:
- Scientific expertise: A PhD in a relevant field, preferably immunology or molecular biology, or other relevant fields like biochemistry, pharmacology or pharmaceutical science, providing you with a strong understanding of biopharmaceutical innovation and capability to facilitate innovations within immune-inflammatory diseases.
- EQE qualification: Passed the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) or about to do it.
- Experience with pharmaceutical patenting: At least eight years of experience as a patent attorney within the pharmaceutical industry or at an IP law firm, ensuring you have the skills and expertise needed to manage complex patent portfolios and matters specifically related to pharmaceuticals, including SPC’s, patent listing, generics/biosimilars and regulatory exclusivity.
- Special knowledge: Familiarity with antibody patenting and/or experience in patent infringement litigation is highly valued.
- Analytical thinking and scientifically minded: Strong analytical skills combined with the ability to simplify complexity and provide advice to stakeholders with the proper understanding of the science and commercial context.
- Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English and with the ability to effectively convey complex issues to stakeholders and senior management.
- Collaborative and accountable: Self-driven, independent, yet highly motivated for teamwork and taken on responsibilities ensuring delivery and follow-through.
